Lady Vols meet Charlotte in NCAA tournament
The University of Tennessee women's soccer team will begin NCAA tournament play 7:30 p.m. Friday against Charlotte in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Lady Vols, who won the program's fourth SEC tournament title Sunday as a No. 6 seed, are making their eighth-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, where they are 10-6-2 all-time and 6-0-1 in first-round games.
Charlotte (17-3-1) earned the Atlantic-10 automatic bid with the conference tournament championship. Charlotte enters the tournament riding a school-record 14-match win streak and outscoring opponents 52-6. The 49ers and Lady Vols have met just once before, when UT took a 3-0 victory at home on Sept. 14, 2003.
The Lady Vols (10-10-2) have played 12 matches this season against squads in the tournament field, garnering two victories and a tie against tournament teams in the past week.
The UT-Charlotte winner will play the North Carolina-Western Carolina winner Sunday. North Carolina is the tournament's top seed.
Volleyball: Tennessee libero Chloe Goldman was named SEC defensive player of the week for the fourth time this season.
Goldman had 25 digs against Arkansas and 15 against Ole Miss in a pair of victories.
She leads the SEC in digs.
The Lady Vols will close out their home schedule this weekend when they face Florida on Friday and South carolina on Sunday.
