Two sign with men's golf team
The Tennessee men’s golf team picked up two signees Wednesday, the opening day of signing period for non-football sports.
Jay Vandeventer, a Baylor School product who grew up in Bristol, Tenn., and Adam Myers, another product of UT’s pipeline to England, signed on.
Vandeventer has made his mark in amateur golf and is ranked 18th in the Golfweek Junior poll. He has 13 top-10 finishes in National Junior events.
He tied for fifth at the Horseshoe Bend Junior Classic and third at the Club Car Junior. He finished third in the TSSAA Division II-AA state championships. He won the Harbor Town Links Championship by shooting a 68 in the final round.
Myers, from Northhampton, England. finished second in the Henry Cooper Junior Masters and fourth in the Carris Trophy competition in 2008.
“In our opinion, he is one of the top prospects in Europe,” UT coach Jim Kelson said.
Four golfers on UT’s roster this season are from England: Chris Paisley, Darren Renwick, Daniel Casey and Garrick Porteous.
Women’s Basketball: Taber Spani, a 6-foot-1 guard from Lee’s Summit, Mo., signed a letter of intent with Tennessee. Spani averaged 29.6 points and 11 rebounds last season for Metro Academy.
Two more recruits, Webb School of Knoxville forward Faith Dupree and guard Kamiko Williams from Clarksville (Tenn.) Northeast, are expected to sign with the Lady Vols on Friday.
Cross Country: Tennessee senior Sarah Bowman was named first-team all-SEC for cross country Wednesday. Second-team honors went to sophomores Brittany Sheffey and Michael Spooner. Chris Bodary was named to the men’s all-freshman team.
Women’s Golf: Former UT All-American Marci Turner tied for ninth at the Futures Tour qualifying tournament Friday in Lakeland, Fla. The 94 players who made the 54-hole cut will receive exempt or non-exempt status for the 2009 Futures Tour season. The number of exempt players will be determined after the completion of LPGA Qualifying School in early December. Former Lady Vol Angela Oh, (2006-08) tied for 45th, while Violeta Retamoza (2002-06) missed the cut.
