Rossi reaches top of UT's scoring ranks

This was more like it for Tennessee's soccer team Friday night.

Kylee Rossi scored her seventh goal and became the program's all-time leading scorer in a 2-1 SEC victory over No. 15 LSU at Regal Stadium.

The win over LSU (7-2, 1-2 SEC) ended a two-match losing streak for Tennessee (4-7, 1-2).

"I could go down the list of the great performances this evening,'' Lady Vols coach Angela Kelly said. "It just feels good because it felt familiar. You felt the excitement in the stadium and, most importantly, you saw the smiles on the players' faces. They just had fun and that's really the key."

Mick Imgram scored first for Tennessee in the 49th minute. Rossi scored 28 seconds later, lofting in a shot from 15 yards.

Rossi surpassed Olympian Rhian Wilkinson and now is UT's all-time leader in five categories: points (88), goals (37), shots (301), game winners (14) and golden goals (four).

"It's definitely an honor to break the record,'' Rossi said. "I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for getting me to that level. Although it's a great honor, it doesn't mean anything right now because we've got to keep going and keep winning."

UT hosts Arkansas (9-2, 2-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Volleyball: Rob Patrick became the winningest coach in Tennessee volleyball history with No. 230 in a 25-15, 25-23, 28-26 SEC victory over Auburn (5-11, 0-5 SEC) at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"This record is a tribute to the support that the University of Tennessee administration and (Lady Vols athletics director) Joan Cronan provide to our program,'' Patrick said. "I've also been very fortunate to have great assistant coaches and, most of all, I've been blessed with fantastic student-athletes during my time at Tennessee."

Farren Powe had a career-high 15 kills and .625 hitting percentage for Tennessee (9-6, 4-2).

"We have been trying to find another hitter to help us get kills and, as evidenced by her performance tonight, Farren is one of the people that can do that for us,'' Patrick said.

Baseball: The White team scored four runs in the ninth in battling to an 8-8 tie with the Orange in the opening game of Tennessee's Orange & White World Series.

"I don't know if you can duplicate spring intensity but I think this is the best way you can try to do it,'' Vols coach Todd Raleigh said.

Tyler Horne went 4-for-4 with four singles, an RBI and two stolen bases for the Orange.

Kentrail Davis, a Freshman All-American last season, was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple for the White.

"I am just trying to get my confidence back in my swing,'' Davis said. "I'm swinging pretty good."

The series resumes at 7 p.m. Oct. 17.

Cross Country: Tennessee's Sarah Bowman ran an SEC-best time of 20 minutes, 28 seconds for 6,000 meters and finished 11th out of 301 runners in the brown race of the Brooks Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.

Bowman led UT to 198 points and a sixth-place finish in the field of 43 schools. The Lady Vols improved by two places over last year.

"Sarah was ninth a year ago, but she ran over 20 seconds faster this year,'' Lady Vols coach J.J. Clark said. "That shows the quality of the field this time around."

Women's Tennis: The Tennessee doubles team of Caitlin Whoriskey and Maria Sorbello was knocked out of the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships, losing to Marina Cossou and Claire Ilcinkas of Cal 8-3 in the consolation-draw final.

Men's Tennis: UT's Matt Brewer and Bryan Swartz both won singles matches to advance to the second round of pre-qualifying in the D'Novo men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
