Adams: UT should say who it's not hunting

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008
As we go through Week 3 of "Tennessee Without A Football Coach," you probably have concluded that UT isn't any closer to naming a new coach than it was in Week 1.

Adams: Something to chew on for fans hungry for more

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008
Tennessee's victory over UT Martin was virtually assured by halftime. But that didn't kill the suspense at Thompson-Boling Arena on Tuesday night. As the Vols struggled down the stretch of a one-sided game, you could sense the tension in the hungry crowd.

Strange: Lots of questions about Vols, few answers

Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008
Phillip Fulmer had some interesting praise for Vanderbilt on Tuesday. "They've done a good job of using their personnel,'' said Tennessee's head coach. "Particularly when D.J. Moore comes over and gives 'em some plays from an offensive standpoint."

Adams: Lady Vols need time to mature

Monday, Nov. 17, 2008
You knew this was coming. You just didn't know it was coming so soon.
You thought Tennessee could at least make it to Thanksgiving without missing superstar Candace Parker and all the other departed veterans from back-to-back national championships.
But that was before you got a load of 16th-ranked Virginia and junior guard Monica Wright, who delivered a Parker-like performance in the Cavaliers' 83-82 victory at Thompson-Boling Arena on Monday night. Full story »

Strange: Maze makes a point with assists

Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008
The box score said Bobby Maze launched his Tennessee career with 10 assists Saturday night. That's not the whole story.
After the horn sounded and the opening-night crowd of 21,864 emptied out of Thompson-Boling Arena, he added a few more. Full story »

Mattingly: Crump held much UT history

Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008
Younger Tennessee fans have no idea where Crump Stadium was, for whom it was named, and what significance it holds in Tennessee football history. With this being the weekend Tennessee and Ole Miss traditionally played in the days before SEC expansion came about, an explanation is in order.

Packer: Howell won't forget Lofton

Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008
Jordan Howell is concerned about a legacy that will be left with Tennessee basketball. It's not his legacy that he's worried about, it's the legacy of his best friend, Chris Lofton.

Adams: Some names to toss around while you're bored

Friday, Nov. 14, 2008
Tennessee has been in the market for a new football coach for under two weeks, but the process is already boring. Maybe that’s because it’s in a holding pattern. You have known for more than a week that Butch Davis is UT’s No. 1 pick. But you don’t know if he would leave North Carolina after only two years on the job. Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is on UT’s short list. Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly is, too. But both of them have a team in the running for a conference championship -- and in Leach’s case, a national championship. Nothing can happen on those fronts until after the regular season.

Adams: Plenty of bowls for SEC teams

Friday, Nov. 14, 2008
Auburn has lost five games overall and is 2-4 in SEC play. It has lost so much, you have to wonder if coach Tommy Tuberville will lose his job.
But despite all that losing, it still could qualify for a bowl game by winning one of its last two games. Is SEC football great or what? Full story »

Adams: Kelly, Pearl like two peas in a pod

Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008
Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly, left, celebrates with Kazeem Alli after the Bearcats defeated West Virginia 26-23 in overtime last Saturday.

Tudor: Keeping Davis could prove expensive

Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008
With Tennessee apparently eying Butch Davis, among others, for its football coaching job, North Carolina is getting a glimpse of how much it can cost to win big in both football and men’s basketball. In only his second season at Carolina, Davis makes about $2.2 million a year. That’s in the same general bracket as sixth-year basketball coach Roy Williams, who makes about $2.6 million. But if Tennessee — or perhaps another school — offers $3 million or more, what’s UNC to do? The response by many of the school’s fans would be to match the offer, particularly if Davis wins nine or 10 games. Full story »

Adams: While Warren waits, Cobb excels

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008
Brandon Warren could be the poster child for coach Phillip Fulmer’s last team. Warren is the local kid made good in football. He left East Tennessee for Florida State, where he became a freshman All-American tight end in 2006. Then, he decided to come back home – to be close to his mother, who had a bout with cancer, and to play for the Vols. Under NCAA rules, he had to sit out a year. He didn’t realize he would have to sit out two years. That has nothing to do with the NCAA. That’s all about his transition to UT football. Full story »

Adams: Reason for UT candidates to feel good

Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008
Imagine how a candidate for the University of Tennessee football coaching job must have felt when he heard Saturday’s score: Wyoming 13, Tennessee 7. “Surprise” might have come first. But “alarm” probably didn’t come next. It’s easier to take over a high-profile program like UT’s after a losing season than a winning one. Full story »

Adams: Leach strong where UT is weakest

Monday, Nov. 10, 2008
Programs tend to hire coaches who provide them with the quality most lacking in the coaches they replaced. Tennessee's basketball program can vouch for that.
If you apply the same hiring theory to UT football, what would you look for in Phillip Fulmer's replacement? Full story »
